IN
THE HUDDLE
By Erin Throneberry
October 15, 2007 - On a beautiful
Sunday afternoon at the Ann Arbor Pioneer High School practice
field, sporting activity was everywhere: soccer, baseball, tennis,
little league football and most important, SPITFIRE FOOTBALL!
Fourteen women and four coaches came to work this morning. After
warm-ups the squad broke into offensive groups with backs and
receivers going one way, and the linewomen going the other.
The hands look good
on the receiving side of the ball. The veterans have still got it
and those rookies are working hard – some even trying to get some
one-on-one practice with the coaching staff. “Block first, watch the
ball, catch the ball and run”, the rookie tight end was told.
The line was solid.
They asked questions, and talked about what works, how it works, and
what to do to make it work even better. The coaches kept running the
drills so they become second nature and flawless. Just keep moving
the feet as you tuck the ball and run through the line.
In the end everyone
was working on the I-Formation, it’s new for some and it shows that
they are working together to make it work. Coach Val promised the
playbooks soon, but told them in the mean time it is better to “run
the plays and understand them than to memorize anything.”
There are many
exciting things on the horizon from the behind the scenes
aspect…sponsorships, TV coverage, practices, fun, food and friends.
Keep up the hard work! SPITFIRE!
