December 15, 2007 -
This year’s team is going to be
exciting. The 2008 Spitfire rookies have brought a new energy to
the team and practices are starting to heat up! Each practice is an
improvement over the last – drills are being smoother, plays are run
faster and conditioning has begun.
Not only are the coaches starting
to decide which positions each player will learn – the players are
finding out which positions they like best. I can tell you that
players have been coming up to me and asking to play certain
defensive line positions. The other coaches have also been
approached by players vying for their desired spots. Some of them
are leaning toward the offensive side, some are finding they prefer
the defensive side, and others are finding that they like both sides
equally.
The linewomen are learning quickly
and working hard; footwork, blocking, swimming, ripping, breaking
blocks, etc. – these girls are always eager to match up against
each other and test their skills! The skilled positions are also
working very hard with their footwork, catching, blocking, and
throwing. Tackling will have to wait a bit, but they are all very
eager for that part as well.
Each week has also brought us new
recruits. Everyone is doing a great job bringing in new women to
experience Spitfire football. The new recruit often starts out
hesitant – hanging back and watching. However, by the end of
practice, they participate in drills and joke around as if they’ve
always been there – this alone speaks volumes for the character of
this team.
Until next time,
