THREE AND OUT

FOOTBALL THE COACH TED WAY

By Ted Moore

November 1, 2007 - Practices have been getting better every week.  There is new talent coming and the competition for positions is growing fierce! Once everyone is able to get their schedules worked out so that they are able to attend all the practices, we’ll really start learning, improving and becoming a championship-caliber team for 2008.

This time I will discuss the different positions of the defensive line.  Let’s start with the basic four-man front.  The first player is the Strong Side Defensive End – their main responsibility is to achieve outside containment.  When the tight end stays back for pass blocking, she should be able to defeat the double team.  This player is big and fast.

Strong Side Tackle – her main responsibility is to clog the middle up to shut down the running game.  She should be able to occupy two offensive linemen on every play.  This player is the biggest defensive lineman and should be very strong.

Chase Side Tackle – she is also responsible for clogging in the middle to shut down the run.  She should have only one offensive lineman to defeat and then be able to create havoc in the backfield.  This position requires size and speed.

Chase Side Defensive End – her main responsibility is outside containment also, but – unlike her strong side teammate – she will rarely have to deal with a double team situation.  This person is a speed rusher and the most athletic defensive lineman.

There is one other position and that would be the Nose Guard.  This lineman is used in a three and five man front.  It is similar to the strong side tackle, but she is there to control the center and stop and direct run up the middle.
