PLAYER SPOTLIGHT:

Denise Powell

January 1, 2008 - What do an entrepreneur, a politician, a UPS supervisor, a farmer, and an executive assistant all have in common with a Detective Sergeant with the Michigan State Police?  They are Tree Town Spitfire teammates, of course!

Second year player Denise Powell is with the State Police assigned from the Northville Headquarters.   She has had an awesome career with many opportunities.   She started on the road as a trooper from the Pontiac Post, she has been a report writing instructor, assisted as a physical fitness assessor and served as an undercover officer in narcotics.   Her favorite position has been her opportunity to work cold case homicides.   She has also worked with the Governor’s Security Detail.

Coach Val appreciates Denise’s job experience because it helps her keep a calm head in the heat of the moment while she can also be the voice of reason.

Denise was encouraged to tryout by 2007 teammate Jessie Cole.   She was at a point in her life where she could afford to face the ultimate challenge, playing full contact tackle football.   She has found her biggest challenge in playing football to be learning how to perceive potential plays and to anticipate the moves of an opposing team.   She is working on her appreciation of the fundamentals while observing and learning more about the dynamics of the Spitfire offense and defense.

When asked about her favorite football moment, Denise only needs to look to last year’s pre-season scrimmage against the eventual 2007 NWFA champion Pittsburgh Passion.   As she walked out to the stadium, she was proud and nervous to see what it was all about, but she was grateful for the camaraderie of her teammates, they kept her going.
