THE BOYCE BOX

FIRST AND TEN

By Jennifer Boyce

December 15, 2007 - Monday Night Football has nothing on SPITFIRE Football at Bowen Field House!  A recent Monday night practice was HANDS-DOWN one of my favorites.  Although there were fewer team members than we had hoped for (as always seems the case), we did have a new player drive an hour and forty-five minutes to join us!  We went long past the scheduled 9pm end time, and some people did have to leave, but those of us who lingered could have made it last until midnight for sure!

The defensive unit was giving the offense a chance to “feel the pressure” and learning to communicate; receivers were running better routes; running-backs seemed faster; and everyone knew the SPITFIRE squad was in the house!  I got a chance to play defense and can see why people are so intense about doing so.  If I lose my QB spot I have no problem joining you guys on the defensive side of the ball!  Some of you may have to fight me to the ball and the QB.

Ok, enough of that; Defense was awesome, but don’t worry, I’ll let you guys have your fun!  I do have one thing to say about the QB spot to all of you (teammates) who just found out, RED means NO TOUCH!  I wore the brightest red Ohio State Buckeyes shirt I had to indicate “QB NO TOUCH ZONE”, guess that memo got lost somewhere for some of you!  I can’t wait to put on full gear and really get a sense of the game.  It’s tough to hold back when not in pads on the field – there were a few collisions – but you can’t tell me you didn’t want to go back for more!!

For those of you who haven’t had a chance to experience practice (even with the new conditioning phase) like this as a SPITFIRE player, all I can say is “buckle up, it’s going to be an amazing ride”.  SPITFIRE is in the house and I can’t wait until every player can’t sleep at night because they want to get back out there for one more play, one more down, one more chance to move those sticks down-field to another 1st and 10!

From inside the (tackle) Box, hoping your line protects you ‘til next time!
