Spitfire Are Improving

By: Deb Wallace

ROSSFORD, OH - The Toledo Spitfire took on the Milwaukee Momentum for the second time this season. In the first game the Momentum won by a score of 42-8. In this game the Spitfire defense held the Momentum to less than half of those points. But when it was all said and done, the Momentum defeated the Spitfire 20-6.

Offensively, the Spitfire had a good game, but penalties seemed to happen when they were least needed. Olivia Griswold was the quarterback for most of the game while Cindy Hasselbring was in for a short time and threw one interception. Griswold completed two passes, one to Erin Crabtree for 24 yards and the other to Heather Inderrieden for 41 yards and a touchdown. Griswold also carried for 65 yards. Jessie Torda added 36 yards rushing and Toya Pettaway contributed with 29 yards and two first downs.

On the defensive side, the Spitfire had another spectacular game from Sarah Dowd. Overall the whole Spitfire defense did a great job of keeping the Momentum offense in check, by forcing several turnovers and getting one interception by Inderrieden. Beth Podges had two sacks late in the game to help the Spitfire keep the Momentum from scoring. Special teams did not spend a lot of time on the field with the number of turnovers by both teams but they did a great job of keeping the Momentum from getting far on kickoff and punt returns.

Notes: The entire game was played without a working scoreboard and about half of the stadium lights working. The Spitfire hopes that everything is working for their next game on June 10th, which is the last home game of the season.

The Spitfire would like to give a big congratulation to quarterback Cindy Hasselbring. Cindy was honored by the White House as one of the nation’s top educators. She is a math teacher at Milan HS and was recognized for her use of innovative technology in the classroom.
