Spitfire Finish Rough Season
By: Deb Wallace
ERIE, PA - The Toledo Spitfire
faced the Erie Illusion at Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA for their last
game of the season. The ladies were looking forward to this game because it
was the last in a long hard season. They started the season behind the eight
ball due to almost one-third of their roster having injuries that put them
out of commission before play even started. Regardless, the Spitfire fought
hard in every game and this last game was no exception, even though they
lost to the Illusion 44-0.
The offense had their best game of the season
moving the ball and burning time off of the clock. Kentrah Smith led the
team with 25 carries for a total of 70 yards. Cathy Yungmann also had a
great day completing 3 passes for 24 yards. Amy Wilkins had one reception
and a few carries, but did most of her work on special teams where she had 5
returns for a total of 61 yards.
The defense had a good game in terms of
creating turnovers, they forced several fumbles, recovering 3 of them, and
had two interceptions. One interception was by Wilkins and the other by
Heather Inderrieden, which was a pick-off in the endzone. Denise Thompson,
Jessie Torda, Amanda Thames and Yungmann also contributed with good tackles
throughout the game with Thames collecting the lone sack.
Now that the season is over, the team will
regroup in the off-season by having several mini-camps to keep the team
focused. More information on this and the team can be found at
