Spitfire Did Not Have the Karma
By: Deb Wallace
May 28, 2005 - ROSSFORD, OH -
The day was mostly
cloudy, with the sun coming out shortly before the game started. There were
a few showers around the area and just before and just after halftime two
rainbows were seen in the sky above the stadium. Unfortunately there was no
pot of gold to be found at the end of either rainbow as the Spitfire lost a
tough game against the Kentucky Karma.
The defense had their roughest night of the
season so far with a handful of penalties and a few lapses in coverage.
Regardless of this, they had many great plays throughout the night. Amanda
Thames, Joy Youster, and Deondra Banks led the defense in tackles with each
having eleven or more in the game. Also on defense, Heather Inderrieden made
a fantastic play just before halftime by breaking up a “Hail Mary” pass in
the endzone. Inderrieden also had the most carries on kickoff returns with
four, averaging about ten yards per carry. Also having a good night on
defense were Denise Thompson, Amy Wilkins, Kentrah Smith, and Jessie Torda,
all having six or more tackles. The defense also kept the Karma from
converting three straight two-point attempts after touchdowns. The Karma
only made one PAT in the game.
On the offensive side of the ball, Smith led
the Spitfire with fifteen carries and averaging just under four yards per
carry. Torda was second with ten carries for a total of twenty-four yards.
Wilkins and Thompson each had two carries in the game. Cathy Yungmann was
the quarterback for the entire game. She made some nice looking passes, but
none of them made it into the hands of the receivers. Yungmann was
intercepted twice in the game, but only one of those resulted in a touchdown
for the Karma. After this game, the women of the Spitfire are looking
forward to their next game and they hope to find the pot of gold at the end
of the next rainbow.
The Spitfire play their last home game of the
season on Saturday, June 4th against the Pittsburgh Passion. They
are then on the road Saturday, June 11th at the Columbus Comets.
Notes: The Kentucky Karma is another expansion
team in the NWFA. They were 1-3 coming into the game against the Spitfire.
After this game they are 2-3 with the Spitfire record falling to 0-5. More
