On the Road Again
By: Deb Wallace
May 15, 2005 - OTSEGO, MI - The Toledo Spitfire
has taken another road trip. This time they traveled just north of
Kalamazoo, MI to the town of Otsego to face the SW Michigan Jaguars. It was
the Spitfire’s third game of the season and the second one on the road. The
women of the Spitfire knew that this game was going to be a tough one, since
they were going up against an undefeated team on their home field. But they
were ready to play and they played hard.
For the third game in a row, there was
outstanding play by the defense all night. They forced three fourth down
situations on the Jaguars, and came up with a turnover on downs for two of
them. They also held the Jaguars scoreless in the first and fourth quarters.
Joy Youster and Sandra Bowen led the defense, with good help from Amy
Wilkins and Jessie Torda. Youster is continuing with punting duty, and she
averaged about twenty yards per punt in this game. The defensive line did
the most damage on the Jaguars during Point After Touchdown attempts by
blocking all four that were tried. The only way for the Jaguars to add
points after a touchdown was to run a two-point conversion play, which they
did successfully twice. Denise Thompson helped to keep the Jaguars scoreless
in the first quarter by making the one and only fumble recovery that the
Spitfire would get. Late in the fourth quarter, Heather Inderrieden
intercepted the ball in the end zone, helping to keep the Jaguars off the
board in that quarter. On the offensive side of the ball, Inderrieden led
the Spitfire with two great receptions, and Torda who carried the ball well.
Youster and Wilkins also had a few short carries in the game. Although they
lost 40-0, the Spitfire played their best game so far this season and
against a very tough team. They are working hard and looking forward to
their next game in the hopes of getting their first win of the season.
The next game will be at home Saturday, May 21st
against the Milwaukee Momentum. They will play at home again on Saturday,
May 28th against the Kentucky Karma.
Notes: The Spitfire dressed 19 women, the
Jaguars had 35. The Spitfire are now 0-3, the Jaguars improved their record
to 4-0. More information can be found at
