Home Sweet Home

That’s right, the
Toledo Spitfire opened their home season with a game against the Baltimore
Burn on Saturday April 30th. The women of the Spitfire were
pumped up about playing in front of the home crowd, so much so that they
were dancing to “YMCA” during early warm-ups as it was being played over the
PA system.
This early energy was in evidence during the
first half as the Spitfire defense came out strong. In the first quarter,
Joy Youster and Amanda Thames combined for three sacks, with two resulting
in fumbles, the Burn recovered both. This strong defensive effort kept the
Burn from scoring more than once in the quarter. In the second quarter the
defense continued their strong play with another sack for Thames and some
good pass coverage by Youster. The Spitfire offense was a little slow to get
started, but showed life during the second with some short runs by Jessie
Torda and Kentrah Smith. The Burn scored twice in the quarter on some good
passes that just got past the Spitfire defenders and from an interception
late in the quarter. In the third quarter, the Spitfire offense started to
show some life with several short carries by Youster, Torda, and Amy
Wilkins. Even so, the Spitfire could not find the endzone, whereas the Burn
found it yet again. In the fourth quarter, the Spitfire played hard with a
sack by Aysha Matsimela and an interception by Torda on a two-point
conversion play by the Burn on their second touchdown of the quarter. Though
the Spitfire played hard yet again, they fell to the Burn 46-0.
The next game for the Spitfire is May 14th
at the SW Michigan Jaguars, before returning home May 21st to
face the Milwaukee Momentum.
Notes: This contest was more evenly matched
compared to the game against the Cincinnati Sizzle. The Burn had 35 players
dressed with the Spitfire having 20 players for this game. The Burn are in
their fourth year and are an inaugural team in the National Women’s Football
Association, the Spitfire are in their third season. More information can be
