Spitfire Starts Season At Home

April 15, 2006 - ROSSFORD, OH - The Toledo Spitfire almost started out the season with a bang. In a game they dominated in total yardage and time of possession, they should have come away with a win. Well, in the final minute of play, the Erie Illusion capitalized on one mistake deep in the Spitfire end and they had the one and only score of the game. Erie won 8-0.

Rookie quarterback Olivia Griswold started for the Spitfire and had a good first game, throwing for 56 yards, and rushing for another 48. The other rookie quarterback, Cindy Hasselbring, also saw some action during the game with 24 yards passing. Running back Jessie (Torda) Holmes carried the ball for 49 yards, and also had a few nice tackles on defense.

The Spitfire defense had a spectacular night. The entire first half, they did not allow the Illusion past the 50 yard line. Amanda Thames was a force to be reckoned with throughout the entire game, making many timely tackles. Thames also had one interception and had 20 yards on the return. Sarah Dowd and Denise Thompson also had interceptions in the first half.

Next up for the Spitfire is a road trip to Milwaukee to play the Momentum on Saturday, April 22nd. The next home game is Saturday, April 29th against the Cincinnati Sizzle. More information on the Spitfire can be found at www.toledospitfire.com.
