IN THE HUDDLE

By Erin Throneberry

As I sit here in a turkey state of mind, it is a blank sheet of paper.  This is the first article for which I've struggled to come up with a theme.  As I look over my notes from practice, I see a running tally of who was there, what was being done, and who is playing where, I start thinking that maybe I should just publish these ideas and let people know how I REALLY feel.

Seriously though, as I look through these notes it occurs to me that in the few practices I have been able to make it to, I have learned so many names and have been impressed by what I have seen.  Some of my comments include the players' children at practice and what they have been up to.  more...

THE BOYCE BOX -

FIRST AND TEN

By Jennifer Boyce

Winter has arrived in Michigan once again...just in time for our practices in Eastern Michigan University's Bowen Field House to start heating up!  We see new faces regularly becoming part of the Spitfire Team.   Jersey numbers are being assigned. helmets and pads are being ordered, and car-pools are being arranged.   Thanksgiving has come and gone with that treasured long weekend of lounging around all day (some of us in the same spot for days!) and watching football.

It's exciting to watch the game from my freshened perspective; seeing a play come together (or fall apart) with a new understanding is almost like an obsession.   During the holiday weekend I was able to watch several consecutive days of college and professional games.  more...

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT:

Jamie "ADJ/Crazy Legs" Combs

By Erin Throneberry

At the age of 20 Jamie is a 2 year veteran on this year's squad.  She hails from Toledo, Ohio and is a student at Bowling Green State University.  She is also a part-time supervisor for UPS.  Jamie has played sports for several years including her time in high school at Toldeo Christian where she played soccer on defense, and indoor soccer as goalie, mid, defense and striker.  What she learned in soccer about positioning and angles has come in handy on the football field.

When conflicts arose between work and playing soccer in college, Jamie began looking for something else to keep her athletically active.  more...

THREE AND OUT -

FOOTBALL THE COACH TED WAY

By Ted Moore

Building a cohesive unit on the line of scrimmage is very important.  Just like the Offensive Line, the Defensive Line needs to have all parts working as one for the success of the team.  If the Defensive Line is doing its job, then the Linebackers and Defensive Backs can do theirs. more...

Player Spotlight

Shirley "Sporty Girl" Davis

By Erin Throneberry

"Shirley is strong, with a tremendous work ethic and leads by example," says Coach Val.  Shirley is a 2 year defensive veteran.  In her first year she talked to Coach Ted about playing nose guard.  The coaching staff figured nose guard and defensive tackle would be perfect for her.  She's entering her third season, and enjoys herself every time she is on the field. more...
