IN
THE HUDDLE
By Erin Throneberry
As we go through
life we meet many people. They have shared lunches, shared bus
seats, held our hands through break-ups, dried our tears in good and
bad times, they have become our friends. These are the people we
look back and say, "They changed my life." Some of those
friends started with us in grade school or maybe you met them in
High School or College.
As your start your
new adventure in football, new friendships will form. You may have
recruited a friend to come play or you may be the shy girl on the
team finding your own niche. In any case, your new friends will be
with you for some time to come. You will talk with them at practice,
maybe chat online. You might exchange numbers and go have dinner or
watch football.

THE BOYCE BOX -
FIRST AND TEN
By Jennifer Boyce
Monday Night
Football has nothing on SPITFIRE Football at Bowen Field
House! A recent Monday night practice was HANDS-DOWN
one of my favorites. Although there were fewer team members
than we had hoped for (as always seems the case), we did
have a new player drive an hour and forty-five minutes to
join us! We went long past the scheduled 9pm end time, and
some people did have to leave, but those of us who lingered
could have made it last until midnight for sure!
The
defensive unit was giving the offense a chance to "feel the
pressure" and learning to communicate; receivers were
running better routes; running-backs seemed faster; and
everyone knew the SPITFIRE squad was in the house! I got a
chance to play defense and can see why people are so intense
about doing so. If I lose my QB spot I have no problem
joining you guys on the defensive side of the ball! Some of
you may have to fight me to the ball and the QB.

PLAYER
SPOTLIGHT:
Holly
"Dutch" Horodeczny
By
Erin Throneberry
How many women
in our league can say they had the opportunity to play football
in high school? One of our own has the honor - Holly
Horodeczny played football in 7th grade and again as a junior in
high school. She says the biggest difference between playing
football in high school with the boys to now is now she shares
one locker room with 35 sweaty women instead of having her own
locker room to herself after a team meeting with 30 sweaty high
school boys.
One of Holly's
favorite memories is playing ball with her older brother Matt.
He lost his identity that year and was known as "Holly's older
brother." Holly grew up with 2 older brothers, Matt (1 year
older) and Kirk (3 years older), and 2 older sisters; Kathryn
(her twin older by 1 minute), and Hillary (5 years older). She
learned to play football with her family. Her father and
brothers were her biggest influence.

THREE
AND OUT -
FOOTBALL THE COACH TED WAY
By Ted Moore
This year's team is
going to be exciting. The 2008 Spitfire rookies have brought a new
energy to the team and practices are starting to heat up! Each
practice is an improvement over the last - drills are being
smoother, plays are run faster and conditioning has begun.
Not only are the
coaches starting to decide which positions each player will learn -
the players are finding out which positions they like best.

Player Spotlight
Latoya Pettaway
By Erin Throneberry
Latoya is 26 and
from Toledo, Ohio. She is a sports fanatic. In her
spare time Latoya loves to play her XBOX and listen to R&B.
When she was 9, Latoya started dribbling a basketball. During
a summer sports program at University of Toledo she added track.
By the time she was in High School she got involved in
basketball, track, and cross country.
Latoya has
"technically" been on the Spitfire roster for 2 years, but has
actually played for 1 full season and 1 game. Her first
season was 2006.
