Tree Town Spitfire Victorious in Debut

April 19, 2008 - The Tree Town Spitfire opened the 2008 National Women's Football Association season with a forfeit victory over the Indianapolis Chaos.

As nice as it is to start the season with a win, we certainly would have preferred to play that game and get our rookies one more “live” experience prior to this week’s home opener.  The disappointment and frustration of waiting another week before taking the field under the Saturday night lights will quickly be replaced with excitement and anticipation.

The Spitfire will host the Erie Illusion April 26, 7:00 pm at Pioneer High School’s Hollway Field.  General admission tickets will be available at the gate: $5 for adults and students; no admission charge for children aged 5 years and under.

In the Huddle (Part I)

February 2, 2008 - New faces, old faces, a New Year!  Welcome to all practice all the time!  And don’t forget the team lifts…

What happened to the days when we could lift a little, practice a little and WATCH a lot of football to learn?  Now that the college season is over and the same is almost true for the NFL season we need to concentrate on our own task at hand.  Our season starts April 19 (not too far off) against Indianapolis.  It will be our first test to see how what we have learned will play out for real.  It is our chance to show our opponents we’re here and we are going to hit hard and fight even harder. more...

In the Huddle (Part II)

February 2, 2008 - Ladies, I have a new respect, admiration, and understanding.  Growing up I was the girl who would turn on football even if my dad wasn’t home.  I am an only child and my father was a firefighter who worked for 24 hours every third day.  I didn’t care if it was college or pro (Saturday or Sunday), I would watch football.  I love football. more...

In the Huddle

January 1, 2008 - The past few weeks have been busy for everyone.  At a recent practice we had alumni Jessie Cole and Leilani Russell visit from Virginia; it was good to see them.  Over the holiday break Sarah arranged for a couple of Holiday Workouts.  Now that Thanksgiving and Christmas have passed, everyone can concentrate on the next scheduled holiday. more...

Three and Out

January 1, 2008 - Well, the holidays have come and gone - now it is time to really start focusing on the upcoming season.  Everyone had a nice break and should now be eager to return to practice.  With just over 100 days until the season opener scheduled for April 19th, the ladies of the Spitfire are getting ready to kick some butt in 2008!! more...

Beth Yee

January 1, 2008 - January 13th is a very important day for Beth and her husband, Chris, as she is due with her first child.   So late in her pregnancy, she has had trouble getting up and down the stairs, as all the moms can attest, and can only imagine she "might be a little slow off the line in 3 months!" more...

Denise Powell

January 1, 2008 - What do an entrepreneur, a politician, a UPS supervisor, a farmer, and an executive assistant all have in common with a Detective Sergeant with the Michigan State Police?  They are Tree Town Spitfire teammates, of course! more...

In the Huddle

December 15, 2007 - As we go through life we meet many people. They have shared lunches, shared bus seats, held our hands through break-ups, dried our tears in good and bad times, they have become our friends. These are the people we look back and say, “They changed my life.” Some of those friends started with us in grade school or maybe you met them in High School or College.  more...

The Boyce Box

December 15, 2007 - Monday Night Football has nothing on SPITFIRE Football at Bowen Field House!  A recent Monday night practice was HANDS-DOWN one of my favorites.  Although there were fewer team members than we had hoped for (as always seems the case), we did have a new player drive an hour and forty-five minutes to join us!  We went long past the scheduled 9pm end time, and some people did have to leave, but those of us who lingered could have made it last until midnight for sure! more...

Three and Out

December 15, 2007 - This year’s team is going to be exciting.   The 2008 Spitfire rookies have brought a new energy to the team and practices are starting to heat up!  Each practice is an improvement over the last – drills are being smoother, plays are run faster and conditioning has begun. more...

Holly "Dutch" Horodeczny

December 15, 2007 - How many women in our league can say they had the opportunity to play football in high school?  One of our own has the honor – Holly Horodeczny played football in 7th grade and again as a junior in high school.  She says the biggest difference between playing football in high school with the boys to now is now she shares one locker room with 35 sweaty women instead of having her own locker room to herself after a team meeting with 30 sweaty high school boys. more...

Latoya Pettaway

December 15, 2007 - Latoya is 26 and from Toledo, Ohio.  She is a sports fanatic.  In her spare time Latoya loves to play her XBOX and listen to R&B.  When she was 9, Latoya started dribbling a basketball.  During a summer sports program at University of Toledo she added track.  By the time she was in High School she got involved in basketball, track, and cross country. more...

In the Huddle

December 2, 2007 - As I sit here in a turkey state of mind, it is a blank sheet of paper.  This is the first article for which I’ve struggled to come up with a theme.  As I look over my notes from practice, I see a running tally of who was there, what was being done, and who is playing where, I start thinking that maybe I should just publish these ideas and let people know how I REALLY feel.  more...

The Boyce Box

December 2, 2007 - Winter has arrived in Michigan once again…just in time for our practices in Eastern Michigan University’s Bowen Field House to start heating up!  We see new faces regularly becoming part of the Spitfire Team.   Jersey numbers are being assigned, helmets and pads are being ordered, and car-pools are being arranged.   Thanksgiving has come and gone with that treasured long weekend of lounging around all day (some of us in the same spot for days!) and watching football.  more...

Three and Out

December 2, 2007 - Building a cohesive unit on the line of scrimmage is very important.  Just like the Offensive Line, the Defensive Line needs to have all parts working as one for the success of the team.  If the Defensive Line is doing its job, then the Linebackers and Defensive Backs can do theirs.  more...

Shirley "Sporty Girl" Davis

December 2, 2007 - “Shirley is strong, with a tremendous work ethic and leads by example,” says Coach Val.  Shirley is a 2 year defensive veteran.  In her first year she talked to Coach Ted about playing nose guard.  The coaching staff figured nose guard and defensive tackle would be perfect for her.  She’s entering her third season, and enjoys herself every time she is on the field.  more...

Jamie "ADJ/Crazy Legs" Combs

December 2, 2007 - At the age of 20 Jamie is a 2 year veteran on this year’s squad.  She hails from Toledo, Ohio and is a student at Bowling Green State University.  She is also a part-time supervisor for UPS.  Jamie has played sports for several years including her time in high school at Toldeo Christian where she played soccer on defense, and indoor soccer as goalie, mid, defense and striker.  What she learned in soccer about positioning and angles has come in handy on the football field.  more...

In the Huddle

November 1, 2007 - When I began this quest over a year ago, it was as a friend of a prospective player and one of the team’s biggest fans.  I followed them everywhere they played last year.  This year I am still a friend of the same player, a big fan, and now I have the job of the team’s staff writer.  more...

The Boyce Box

November 1, 2007 - I am a Spitfire rookie preparing to play my first year of full contact football, but that initial or introductory phase didn’t last too long.  Although the rookie label still applies, there has been little “taking it easy on the rookie” since the second weekend of tryouts.  I’ve been shot-gunned into “THE quarterback” role.  I went from walking the sidelines and trying to find my footing, to diving head first into the end zone! more...

Three and Out

November 1, 2007 - Practices have been getting better every week.  There is new talent coming and the competition for positions is growing fierce! Once everyone is able to get their schedules worked out so that they are able to attend all the practices, we’ll really start learning, improving and becoming a championship-caliber team for 2008.  more...

Daneé "Skittles" Moore

November 1, 2007 - Daneé Moore is a four year veteran, mother of four, wife of a coach, and executive assistant who puts her heart and soul into everything she does.  Her greatest strength in football is that she is “mentally and physically tough,” says Coach Val.  Daneés football career began while the team was in Toledo and she loves it as much as she did her first season. more...

In the Huddle

October 15, 2007 - On a beautiful Sunday afternoon at the Ann Arbor Pioneer High School practice field, sporting activity was everywhere: soccer, baseball, tennis, little league football and most important, SPITFIRE FOOTBALL! Fourteen women and four coaches came to work this morning. After warm-ups the squad broke into offensive groups with backs and receivers going one way, and the linewomen going the other.  more...

The Boyce Box

October 15, 2007 - Full contact what?  Tree Town who?  Have you lost your mind?   These are the questions that flooded my brain when my husband called me one Saturday morning and told me he ran into a recruiter from a local women’s football team.   He said that the recruiter paid more attention to him than his female coworkers once he mentioned that his wife would be interested!  more...

Three and Out

October 15, 2007 - We had a very good turnout for the October 7th practice, but we still need more line players.  In my opinion, the line is the best place to play because of the constant action and the fact that you always get to hit someone until the play is over!  more...

Sandi "One-Eye" Bowen

October 15, 2007 - A 7th grade Sandi Waters was asked to jot down which sports she might be interested in playing for the year. A friend suggested she write football because she was a big fan of the sport. As her teacher (who turned out to be the football coach) walked around and saw her answer he told her to “pick another sport.” For the next several years she did just that; she played basketball, soccer, ran track and field, but the football bug was festering underneath.  more...
